Typically we have to keep hand written notes in notebooks and/or hand written invoices on clipboards. Then either we transcribe all that information ourselves into Excel or QuickBooks, or scan and email it back to the office for someone else to do. For some smaller owner/operators that typically means that the moments at home with their family is spent doing data entry instead of savoring what little time they have outside of “work”.

To put an end to all this waste of time and sometimes an unprofessional perception, I began the search for an alternative option a few months ago. I found a few great options like Invoice2go and Invoice ASAP which had outstanding features like payment options on the invoice or integration with QuickBooks. But they all had drawbacks, including monthly fees ranging from $8 to $30 per month.

Then, while digging deeper into the searches I came across this invoicing application called Joist. It is primarily marketed to the builders and contractors market, but can easily be tailored to our needs.

One of the key benefits we love most about this app is that it’s completely FREE! Why waste the money each month on an invoicing application, when it could be put to better uses like fuel, vehicle maintenance, upgrades, and especially the family?

Other great features are that it is easy to set-up, customize it with your own logo, signature section for the Drivers to sign, pictures can be uploaded onto the invoice, a note section, and invoice emails can be sent to multiple people (like yourself, accountant, and trucking company).

It gets even better! … Their customer service is fantastic. When you call, a human picks up the phone and answers all of your questions. I don’t think I’ve contacted any companies recently that didn’t have some form of automation, leaving you waiting on hold or pushing numbers to talk to somebody.

The only 2 drawbacks for me that I have come across so far is the lack of payment options on the sent invoice, and length of emailed invoice when using the signature and note fields.
